A Way Out

A prison break becomes the starting point for a tense, cinematic two-player drama built around mistrust, revenge, and a desperate bid for freedom. A Way Out casts one player as volatile convict Leo and the other as reserved banker Vincent, forcing the pair to cooperate despite their clashing personalities and motives. The action moves far beyond cell blocks and guard towers, taking its fugitives through hospitals, farms, cities, and increasingly dangerous confrontations. Its tone shifts confidently between hard-edged crime thriller, intimate character drama, and moments of surprising humor.

Co-op is not an optional extra here: two people must play, either together on one screen or online, with each participant controlling one protagonist. Most scenes use a dynamic split-screen view, allowing both players to act independently at once; one might distract a guard in conversation while the other sneaks through a restricted area, for example. Gameplay regularly changes pace, mixing stealth, simple puzzles, dialogue decisions, fistfights, shooting, driving, and small competitive diversions such as darts or arm wrestling. The campaign remains largely linear, but its constant variety makes teamwork matter more than mastery of any one combat system, while a few choices and interactions give each partnership its own flavor.

Hazelight’s strongest idea is how it turns cooperation into storytelling rather than merely making two players share a mission. Split-screen framing is used creatively during escapes, chases, and quiet conversations, keeping both characters present even when their objectives differ. Leo and Vincent feel distinct in both attitude and animation, and the game’s focused runtime makes it easy to finish across a few lively sessions without exhausting its premise. Fans of It Takes Two, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, and accessible cinematic adventures will find plenty to enjoy, especially if they want a story-driven co-op game that demands communication but does not require expert shooter skills.
