A sun-scorched expedition replaces the familiar Gothic estate crawl with a harsh desert campaign built on Darkest Dungeon’s unforgiving turn-based foundations. Black Reliquary sends a desperate roster of heroes into the Valley, a hostile land of ancient ruins, shifting sands, and secrets buried around the ominous artifact at its center. The mood is still oppressive and tactical, but its setting, music, and voiced storytelling give the adventure a distinct identity rather than feeling like a simple collection of extra dungeons. Expect attrition, difficult choices, and a constant sense that every supply, skill, and surviving party member matters.

Combat revolves around carefully managing four-person formations, exploiting enemy positions, and balancing damage against healing, stress control, stuns, movement, and status effects. Familiar Darkest Dungeon systems are extensively reworked, so veterans cannot rely entirely on old habits: heroes, enemies, encounters, progression, and campaign structure all demand fresh strategies. Expeditions through the new regions involve preparation in town, party composition decisions, dungeon navigation, and the risk of losing valued characters when a run turns disastrous. Black Reliquary requires the original Darkest Dungeon along with the Shieldbreaker and Crimson Court expansions, making it a substantial add-on campaign rather than a standalone RPG.

What stands out is the scale of the overhaul. New playable heroes, bosses, monster factions, regions, original narration, and a bespoke soundtrack make the Valley feel authored as its own grim fantasy setting, while systemic changes keep the familiar loop tense and unpredictable. Its desert aesthetic is a welcome contrast to Darkest Dungeon’s decaying manors and forests, and the campaign provides a lengthy new challenge for players who have exhausted the base game. Fans of Darkest Dungeon, Iratus, or other punishing squad-management RPGs find plenty to admire here, especially if they enjoy learning altered systems through costly mistakes. Newcomers should start with the original game first, while experienced estate veterans are the ideal audience for this demanding, richly expanded descent.
