The arsenal ranges from standard rifles and explosives to carpet-bombing support and tactical nuclear strikes, while captured tanks, naval craft, aircraft, and other vehicles expand the tactical options. Objectives go beyond wiping out enemies, asking squads to recover intelligence, free prisoners, rescue hostages, defend positions, repair machinery, or seize an installation. Success feeds into a rank system, but poor conduct can bring reprimands or end an operation early, adding a little consequence to its otherwise accessible arcade structure.

What distinguishes Cannon Fodder 3 is its willingness to shift constantly between direct infantry skirmishes, vehicle assaults, defensive battles, and boss encounters against oversized mechanized enemies. Day-night cycles and changing weather give its varied global locations a bit more atmosphere, while enemy teleportation systems and force fields force players to think beyond simple rush tactics. It is not a deep military simulator, and its presentation feels firmly rooted in old-school PC action design, but that is part of its appeal.
