Death takes center stage in a sprawling mythic adventure that mixes hack-and-slash combat with dungeon crawling, platforming, and loot-driven progression. Set during the apocalypse-adjacent conflict of the Darksiders universe, the story follows the Horseman as he tries to clear War’s name while uncovering a threat far larger than one brother’s trial. Its tone is dark, grand, and comic-book exaggerated rather than relentlessly grim, with ruined kingdoms, angelic fortresses, demon-haunted realms, and strange maker-forged machinery. Darksiders II (Original) feels like a console-era action epic built around constant forward momentum and big fantasy spectacle.

Combat centers on Death’s paired scythes, which deliver quick combos, aerial attacks, dodges, executions, and brutal Reaper Form transformations. Players roam several large connected regions, accept side quests, hunt bosses, solve Zelda-like mechanisms, and gain experience for skill trees that support either aggressive melee builds or necromancy-focused magic. Gear drops constantly, so armor, talismans, possessed weapons, and stat bonuses make experimentation a major part of the loop; the original release is primarily a solo experience.

What separates it from the first Darksiders is Death’s agility and the heavier emphasis on RPG customization.
