Fortune City becomes a gaudy, blood-soaked playground when photojournalist Frank West returns to cover another zombie outbreak in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. Rather than simply replaying Chuck Greene’s campaign, this alternate take reshapes the story around Frank’s ego, humor, and determination to land an unbeatable scoop. Casinos, shopping plazas, back rooms, and the new sci-fi amusement district Uranus Zone are packed with the series’ trademark mix of grotesque violence and absurd comedy. The mood is deliberately ridiculous, but the ticking clock, survivor rescues, and dangerous psychopath encounters keep the pressure high.

Frank spends his time racing through the city, saving stranded civilians, investigating cases, hunting bosses, and turning almost any object into zombie-clearing equipment. Everyday tools become lethal improvised weapons, while the combo system lets players combine items into increasingly outrageous creations, from electrified gadgets to ridiculous vehicle-mounted carnage. His camera is more than a novelty: photographing horror, drama, brutality, and bizarre situations earns Prestige Points that feed into character leveling and new abilities. Time management remains central, since missions overlap and no single run reveals every event, while online co-op allows another player to join the chaos and make rescues considerably more manageable.

What separates Off the Record from the original Dead Rising 2 is its willingness to remix familiar territory instead of treating Frank as a cosmetic replacement. Uranus Zone is the standout addition, offering neon alien scenery, dangerous attractions, and some of the most entertaining opportunities for improvised slaughter in the series. The game’s intentionally clunky, crowded design can still feel demanding, especially when escorting survivors or juggling urgent objectives, but that friction is part of its tense arcade-like identity. Fans of Dead Rising’s timed sandbox structure, or players who enjoy the comedic excess of Saints Row mixed with survival-horror pressure, find plenty to enjoy here; newcomers should expect a challenging but highly replayable zombie playground.
