You recruit troops and commanders, build forts to improve production and secure key provinces, research enormous spell schools, forge artifacts, and issue strategic orders before battles resolve automatically. Combat can involve massive armies, summoned creatures, priests, siege forces, and battlefield magic, so army composition and commander placement matter as much as raw numbers. Dominion adds a valuable second front: temples, prophets, and preaching expand your sacred influence, while enemy dominion weakens your position and can turn a military victory into a slow collapse.

Depth is the real attraction here, with more than a thousand units, hundreds of spells and items, random heroes who gain renown, and a shared mercenary market that creates tense bidding wars. Nations feel genuinely distinct because their troops, mages, religious strengths, and access to magic demand different strategies rather than cosmetic adjustments. The interface and presentation show their age, and automatic battles require players to learn how to plan ahead instead of reacting in real time, but the systems reward patience. Fans of later Dominions entries, Age of Wonders-style fantasy strategy, or dense 4X games will find a remarkably replayable classic, while newcomers should expect a demanding but memorable learning curve.
