Dujanah (v1.014)

A hand-drawn war zone becomes the stage for a fiercely personal surrealist shooter, where a young woman fights through invading forces while reality repeatedly fractures around her. Dujanah trades military fantasy for an abrasive, strange, and often melancholy portrait of violence, memory, and survival. Its crude-looking figures, clashing colours, distorted soundscape, and deliberately awkward humour create a mood that is equal parts hostile, tragic, and oddly playful. Expect an indie experience that feels more like paging through a damaged sketchbook than entering a conventional battlefield.

First-person combat drives much of the action, with Dujanah using firearms and scavenged weaponry to clear enemies from compact, maze-like spaces. Encounters include oversized bosses and bizarre threats, but the shooting is only one part of the journey: exploration leads into abstract scenes, jokes, unsettling conversations, and abrupt shifts in perspective. Levels frequently bend genre expectations, turning menus, interfaces, and mundane objects into parts of the fiction rather than keeping them safely outside the game world. Progress is saved, allowing its fragmented campaign to be tackled in shorter sessions, though the experience is built for solo play and does not chase multiplayer competition or extensive character customization.

What stands out is the authorial voice behind every rough edge. Jack King-Spooner’s art looks intentionally handmade rather than technically polished, using its limitations to make the world feel unstable and intimate; its visual energy recalls underground zines as much as classic shooters. The game’s old-school technical tricks and noisy presentation give it a warped retro texture, while its story refuses easy moral explanations for war, cruelty, or trauma. Fans of experimental first-person games such as Cruelty Squad, Pathologic, or the stranger corners of late-1990s PC design find plenty to admire, but players wanting clean gunplay and a straightforward plot may find its chaos exhausting.
