A climate-ravaged America becomes the arena for a rough, fast, and surprisingly freeform style of off-road racing. FUEL trades closed circuits for a vast post-apocalyptic landscape of deserts, forests, mountain passes, flooded coastlines, and abandoned tourist spots, where a race can send you across paved roads one minute and straight over a cliffside the next. The tone is pure arcade excess: battered bikes, muscle cars, ATVs, buggies, and trucks tear through a world shaped by oil shortages and extreme weather. Its appeal lies less in realistic motorsport simulation than in the pleasure of choosing a direction and seeing whether your vehicle can survive it.

Races begin from scattered event markers across the map, with checkpoint routes that often leave plenty of room to cut through open terrain and improvise shortcuts. Winning events earns fuel, unlocks new challenges, and expands a garage of around 70 vehicles, each with its own strengths on loose dirt, snow, tarmac, or rocky ground. Two-wheelers can squeeze through tight routes and handle jumps differently from heavier four-wheel machines, while larger vehicles offer stability when the surface gets ugly. Dynamic day-night conditions and severe weather are more than decoration: rain reduces grip, snow reshapes visibility, and storms, sand, and tornadoes can turn an established route into a gamble.

FUEL stands out because it approaches the open-world racing formula with an unusually gigantic sense of scale, especially for its era. The map is designed for roaming as much as competing, rewarding players who enjoy locating hidden events, experimenting with vehicles, and taking ridiculous cross-country detours. Handling is accessible and occasionally loose rather than deeply technical, so players seeking the precision of DiRT Rally or Gran Turismo may find it simplistic. Fans of Burnout-style arcade energy, MotorStorm’s off-road chaos, and the exploratory freedom later associated with Forza Horizon will find a distinctive cult racing game with a harsh weather-beaten personality.
