GTFO (v2024.06.04 & Multiplayer)

A prison descent into an abandoned underground complex becomes one of the most punishing cooperative FPS experiences on PC. GTFO casts four expendable inmates as workers serving the Warden, an unseen authority that sends them into increasingly hostile sectors to retrieve data, secure equipment, or complete other deadly objectives. The mood is oppressive from the first airlock: corridors are nearly black, ammunition is scarce, and every sleeping creature can turn a quiet operation into a desperate last stand. Rather than rewarding lone-wolf heroics, it treats survival as a carefully managed team exercise where a single mistake can doom the whole squad.

Each expedition starts with loadout planning, assigning weapons, tools, boosters, and practical roles before entering the Complex. Teams creep past dormant enemies, use melee strikes to eliminate isolated threats, scan computer terminals for objective clues, collect keycards and supplies, then defend positions when alarms force the horde into motion. Combat is loud, messy, and deliberately unforgiving, demanding controlled fire, smart use of sentry guns, mines, fog repellers, and foam launchers instead of constant shooting. Four-player co-op is clearly the ideal format, since voice communication makes stealth clears and defense setups far more reliable, though competent bots can fill empty slots and handle basic commands, looting, and combat support.

GTFO stands apart through its fusion of tactical stealth, survival-horror tension, and Left 4 Dead-style cooperative panic, with a far steeper learning curve than any of those comparisons suggest. Its Rundown structure provides a rotating collection of missions with varied layouts, escalating objectives, and brutal difficulty tiers, so mastering one run does not guarantee success on the next. Sound design and lighting do much of the heavy lifting, turning distant clicks, breathing, and a flickering flashlight beam into meaningful threats rather than background atmosphere. Players who want a demanding, communication-heavy shooter will find an exceptional co-op challenge here; anyone looking for casual run-and-gun action should bring a patient squad or look elsewhere.
