HEXCRAFT: Harlequin Fair

Toronto’s nocturnal streets become a hostile, shifting maze in this experimental RPG, where a masquerade has turned into a trap and the city seems to think for itself. HEXCRAFT: Harlequin Fair trades conventional quest markers and scripted heroics for a lonely, unsettling escape story built around observation, improvisation, and paranoia. Its mood is grimy urban fantasy: moonlit alleys, occult bargains, unreliable strangers, and the constant sense that safety is temporary. The collapse of an online world hangs over the setting, but the real threat comes from the living systems moving around you.

Survival means searching districts thoroughly, collecting peculiar tools, speaking to residents, and deciding when to hide, negotiate, manipulate, or fight. Magic and firearms sit side by side, letting you prepare homemade concoctions, learn strange rituals, spend cash on weapons, and assemble solutions from whatever the city gives you. Six large areas change over time, while smaller locations add secrets and opportunities; revisiting a familiar place can reveal new dangers, altered relationships, or consequences from an earlier decision. Characters operate on their own motives and emotional states rather than simply waiting for the player, so conflicts can resolve unexpectedly and a seemingly minor action can ripple through an entire zone.

What makes Harlequin Fair compelling is its commitment to simulation over certainty. Rather than offering one polished route through a campaign, it creates situations: people pursue goals, locations develop, and systems collide in ways that make each run feel personal and occasionally chaotic. The low-fi, occult-city atmosphere recalls immersive sims such as Deus Ex and Pathologic more than a standard party-based RPG, though its rougher, stranger experimental edge is very much its own.
