HOTEL BARCELONA is a 2.5D action slasher built around pulp horror, grotesque humor, and the deliberately unruly imagination associated with creators SUDA51 and SWERY. Players control rookie federal marshal Justine, whose thoughts are entangled with the homicidal Dr. Carnival, turning every violent encounter into a fight for survival and control. The result feels like an ’80s VHS nightmare with a sharp arcade-action edge rather than a straightforward tribute to horror cinema.

Combat demands more than charging through enemies: Justine needs to read attacks, manage spacing, time evasions, and capitalize on openings against dangerous killers. Death is part of the strategy, not merely a failure state, because each unsuccessful attempt leaves behind a Slasher Phantom that reenacts the player’s earlier route and attacks. These recorded doubles can absorb hits, draw enemies away, or add damage during a carefully planned rematch, creating a clever loop that rewards learning a stage instead of simply grinding through it. Aggression also fills a blood-powered meter, eventually allowing Justine to trigger Carnival Awakening and unleash a brutally effective transformation when a fight starts slipping away.

Seven themed sections give the hotel the feel of several horror films stitched into one hostile destination, with locations ranging from decaying haunted-house spaces to warped scientific facilities. Every area is designed around hazards, enemy patterns, and a major boss that tests both reflexes and how effectively players use their spectral previous lives. The hand-drawn 2.5D presentation, exaggerated gore, and strange character writing help it stand apart from cleaner, more serious action platformers.
