A rusted one-person submarine becomes a prison, a cockpit, and your only shelter in a blood-red ocean where humanity has almost nothing left. Iron Lung trades jump-scare excess for sustained, stomach-tightening dread, placing you behind the controls of a crude vessel sent to document points of interest beneath an alien sea. The pressure outside makes opening the forward viewing port impossible, leaving you sealed in darkness with machinery, static, and the nagging sense that the mission is not as empty as it sounds. Its tone is grim, stripped-down, and intensely claustrophobic from the first engine hum.

Your task is to steer between marked coordinates, avoid obstacles, and photograph designated sites using the submarine’s external camera. Navigation depends on an unreliable map, position readouts, heading controls, and proximity warnings rather than direct visibility, so every course correction feels like a calculated risk. Taking a picture provides a distorted black-and-white glimpse beyond the hull, but it can reveal more than you want to know. There are no weapons, upgrades, or power fantasies here; success comes from reading instruments, managing uncertainty, and keeping your nerve as unsettling sounds and system feedback turn routine travel into panic.

Iron Lung stands out because it makes limitation its central horror mechanic: the player never has enough information to feel safe, yet must keep moving forward. Its low-fi interface, harsh industrial soundscape, and deliberately ugly camera images create an atmosphere closer to a lost sci-fi nightmare than a conventional monster chase. The compact running time, generally under an hour, makes it ideal for a focused evening scare, while its design leaves enough ambiguity to encourage discussion and repeat visits. Fans of DUSK creator David Szymanski’s stranger projects, or players who enjoy the isolation of SOMA and the submarine tension of Iron Wolf-style simulators, should find plenty to admire; newcomers to horror can finish it, but should expect discomfort rather than action.
