La Pucelle: Ragnarok

A cheerful church-town adventure gradually turns into a surprisingly involved tactical RPG about faith, demons, and rival organizations. Prier, an energetic apprentice exorcist, and her brother Culotte begin with routine monster-hunting assignments before a larger conspiracy pulls their La Pucelle unit across a world plagued by undead and Dark World corruption. The tone mixes earnest fantasy drama with the exaggerated humor familiar to Nippon Ichi fans, while its hand-drawn sprites and expressive character portraits give every battle a classic early-2000s JRPG charm. La Pucelle: Ragnarok also expands the original tale with the substantial Overlord Prier route and crossover recruits from the Disgaea universe.

Battles play out on compact grid-based maps where positioning, turn order, elevation, and character range matter as much as raw levels. Prier’s team attacks enemies directly, but its signature system revolves around purifying corrupted terrain and closing Dark Portals; clever use of elemental energy can create chain reactions that damage whole groups or swing a difficult encounter. Monsters are not merely targets, since purification lets the party convert certain foes into allies and build a flexible roster around their strengths. Fast skill growth, item enhancement, camera rotation, quick travel, and cutscene skipping make the lengthy campaign more approachable than many tactical RPGs of its era, while multiple endings reward commitment.

What separates it from Final Fantasy Tactics-style contemporaries is its playful spiritual-exorcism theme and the puzzle-like battlefield manipulation created by portals and purification links. The story remains more linear than Disgaea’s endless sandbox approach, yet optional characters, alternate paths, equipment tinkering, and the added scenario provide plenty to do beyond the main ending. Veteran strategy-RPG players who enjoy finding efficient combos will get the most from its systems, but newcomers can still enjoy its brisk progression and forgiving sense of momentum.
