A lost 8-bit adventure finally finds a proper home on PC, carrying the rough-edged appeal of the NES era without pretending its age never happened. LarsGadiel is a demanding Metroidvania built around lonely corridors, hostile creatures, hidden routes, and the gradual satisfaction of turning an intimidating maze into familiar territory. Its pixel art, limited color palette, and chip-driven soundtrack deliberately echo Nintendo’s 8-bit hardware, creating a mood closer to an unearthed cartridge than a modern retro imitation. As a prequel to Xenon Valkyrie, it offers a more foundational, exploration-first take on that universe.

Progress comes from pushing through interconnected areas, uncovering upgrades, and revisiting earlier paths once new abilities or stronger equipment open them up. The map and HUD receive improvements for modern screens, making it easier to keep track of explored territory than in many genuinely old-school maze games, while still leaving plenty of room for getting lost and learning the layout. Combat rewards careful positioning and persistence rather than button-mashing, and RPG-style weapon leveling gives regular fighting a useful sense of advancement. A dedicated teleport feature cuts down on some of the genre’s traditional backtracking, while controller support and a tailored Steam Deck mode make it well suited to handheld play.

What separates LarsGadiel from the average pixel-art throwback is its commitment to the structure and difficulty of an actual 8-bit Metroidvania. Secret rooms, alternate discoveries, and port-exclusive surprises encourage repeat visits, while selectable visual filters, including a CRT-style display, let players lean further into the vintage presentation. The labyrinthine design can feel harsh for players who expect constant guidance, but the enhanced interface softens the friction without removing the challenge. Fans of early Castlevania-style atmosphere, Metroid’s exploratory rhythm, and the tougher side of modern indie platformers should find plenty to enjoy, especially if they value discovery over spectacle.
