Players move through five story chapters, searching rooms for clues, documents, collectibles, and computer terminals while piecing together what happened at the motel. Each area introduces environmental puzzles and light platforming, with sprinting and jumping used to navigate unstable spaces and escape danger. The motel does not stick to ordinary hallways for long: rooms can be flooded, frozen, ablaze, filled with musical oddities, or built around altered gravity, giving exploration a surreal escape-room flavor. Hostile encounters add pressure through zombies, demons, spiders, and other creatures, though the emphasis remains on surviving set-piece situations and advancing the mystery rather than mastering elaborate combat. Automatic checkpoints soften the challenge, but the lack of a traditional save system means the roughly hour-to-hour-and-a-half campaign asks for commitment.

What separates Motel Nightmares from many short indie fright-fests is its willingness to constantly change environments instead of relying on one abandoned-building aesthetic. The low-profile UI keeps the screen clear and makes interactive objects, sudden sounds, and movement in the darkness feel more immediate. Its brisk pacing and variety of themed rooms make it more like a supernatural haunted-house ride crossed with simple puzzle exploration than a slow-burn survival horror epic. Fans of concise, experimental horror in the vein of Layers of Fear or indie escape-room scares should find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers benefit from its straightforward controls and checkpoint structure.
