Odallus: The Dark Call is a grim, old-school action-platformer that channels the demanding spirit of 8- and 16-bit classics without feeling like a simple nostalgia exercise. Haggis fights through plague-ridden villages, ancient ruins, caverns, and infernal strongholds, facing an enemy force that turns stolen souls into monsters. The mood is bleak and oppressive, but the responsive movement and chunky pixel art keep every confrontation satisfying rather than hopeless.

Combat revolves around a dependable sword, secondary weapons, careful positioning, and learning when to commit to an attack. Levels are broad, interconnected spaces rather than straightforward corridors, encouraging players to revisit earlier areas after finding keys, upgrades, health increases, and movement tools that open alternative routes. Enemies come in large numbers and bosses demand pattern recognition, with death serving as a lesson in spacing, timing, and resource management. The campaign lasts considerably longer than a typical retro-style platformer thanks to secrets, branching paths, multiple endings, and a Veteran Mode for players who want a harsher challenge.

What separates Odallus from many retro throwbacks is its willingness to combine Castlevania-style combat with the exploration structure of a light Metroidvania.
