ONI: Road to be the Mightiest Oni

Kuuta’s revenge journey trades sprawling open-world excess for a compact, storybook action adventure built around grief, defeat, and demon folklore. As the last surviving soldier of the defeated Oni King, he washes up on the isolated island of Kisejima after losing to Momotaro, the legendary hero of Japanese tales. A strange wind spirit named Kazemaru becomes his unlikely partner, guiding him through trials inhabited by powerful demons from the past. The mood is gentler and more reflective than the premise suggests, with vivid natural landscapes giving the adventure an almost handcrafted picture-book quality.

Combat revolves around controlling Kuuta and Kazemaru together rather than simply mashing through enemies. Kuuta strikes opponents with his club to wear them down, while Kazemaru pulls their spirit free; only by attacking that exposed spirit can the pair finish a foe. Switching attention between the two characters gives even simple encounters a distinctive rhythm, and Kazemaru also helps locate objectives and reveal useful paths. Kisejima is split into three broad regions filled with battles, pursuit sequences, escort tasks, and environmental challenges, while clustered mushrooms serve as currency for stronger clubs and upgrades. Running from dangerous pursuers can be just as important as fighting, turning some progression moments into tense games of chase rather than conventional combat tests.

KENEI DESIGN’s colorful art direction is the standout feature, transforming grassy fields, dense woods, and strange floating stone formations into memorable spaces despite the island’s modest scale. Rather than offering a huge map packed with distractions, the game focuses on a curated route through a small fantasy world where each area has its own visual identity. Its combat can feel deliberately simple, so players looking for the depth of Nioh or Devil May Cry may find the challenge light, but the two-character system remains fresh throughout. Fans of stylized Japanese action games, folklore-infused stories, and shorter adventures in the vein of Lost in Random should find ONI an appealing, approachable detour.
