Realms of Antiquity: The Shattered Crown revives the spirit of early home-computer RPGs, complete with a vast tile-based world, lethal ruins, and a looming evil that demands a capable party. Its tone is adventurous rather than cinematic: villages offer brief safety, dungeons hide valuable relics, and every unexplored corner can contain a brutal encounter. The presentation runs through a TI-99/4A emulator, preserving the chunky 16-colour look and direct, era-specific interface of its 1981 roots.

Players assemble and command a group of up to four heroes drawn from nine character classes, then travel overland, visit settlements, question NPCs, stock up on gear, and search dangerous locations for answers and treasure. Combat unfolds on a two-dimensional tactical grid, where positioning, party composition, weapon choices, and spell use matter more than reflexes. Seven schools of magic provide 60 spells to learn and deploy, while more than 250 distinct items give the party meaningful upgrades as threats escalate. Boats also open up the world in a practical way, allowing expeditions across oceans and along rivers to reach remote towns, islands, and hidden sites.

What stands out is the scale achieved within such a primitive format: the world feels built for patient wandering, with hundreds of monsters, extensive dialogue, and multi-disk breadth that recalls Ultima and The Bard’s Tale more than modern streamlined RPGs. It does not soften its vintage design with modern conveniences, so players should expect sparse feedback, manual-style experimentation, and a slower pace than contemporary indie RPGs.
