Rocket Riot

Rockets are both your weapon and your movement tool in this frantic side-scrolling shooter, turning every firefight into a messy contest of aim, momentum, and collateral damage. Rocket Riot wraps its cartoon violence in chunky 8-bit visuals, but the pace is far more chaotic than a nostalgic retro throwback. Zombies, robots, pirates, absurd animal-themed fighters, and other deliberately ridiculous combatants collide across bright worlds built to be blown apart. The tone stays gleefully silly even when enemy swarms and oversized bosses turn the screen into an explosion-filled panic.

Most missions revolve around eliminating opponents, surviving hostile arenas, or pushing through obstacle-strewn maps with an endlessly firing rocket launcher. Recoil lets you propel your character through the air, so mastering shots means learning to navigate, escape danger, and attack from unexpected angles at the same time. Nearly every piece of scenery can be destroyed, opening tunnels, removing cover, or exposing enemies who thought they were safely hidden; wrecked terrain also rebuilds over time, preventing levels from becoming permanently empty. A large campaign of more than 200 missions steadily introduces new enemy types, mini-bosses, proper boss encounters, and around 20 power-ups that range from genuinely useful to wonderfully disruptive. Mouse and keyboard controls suit quick aiming, while controller support makes the action approachable for players who prefer a twin-stick-like feel.

Its best idea is the combination of destructible terrain and rocket-jumping mobility, which gives small arcade stages surprising tactical flexibility. Rather than simply firing at whatever appears, you constantly decide whether to carve a new route, ambush from beneath the ground, use cover, or launch yourself across the map. Hundreds of unlockable character variants provide a playful reason to keep progressing, while the exaggerated pixel-art effects make even failed attempts entertaining. Fans of Soldat, Worms’ explosive terrain battles, or old-school arena shooters will find plenty to enjoy, especially if they want short, energetic missions instead of a serious military campaign.
