Mental’s army turns a side-scrolling battlefield into a ridiculous, noisy slaughterhouse, and Serious Sam Double D XXL thrives on that excess. The familiar wisecracking hero trades 3D arenas for a hand-drawn 2D run-and-gun format, blasting through ancient Egyptian ruins, volcanic Pompeii, and a prehistoric jungle packed with monsters. Its tone is proudly juvenile and cartoonish, but the pressure is real: enemies flood the screen, projectiles come from every direction, and standing still usually means getting flattened. It is an old-school action game built around momentum, oversized weapons, and constant mayhem rather than careful realism.

Sam runs, jumps, dodges, and shoots his way through 18 stages while picking up an increasingly absurd arsenal of guns, explosives, flamethrowers, and chainsaws. The defining mechanic is the Gunstacker, which lets players pile weapons onto one another and fire the entire stack simultaneously; a shotgun, laser rifle, grenade launcher, and chainsaw can all become one gloriously impractical death machine. Choosing a stack is more than a joke, since different weapon combinations help manage crowds, airborne threats, and tougher enemies such as Biomechanoids and charging Gnaar. Levels reward alert players with hidden routes and secrets, while dedicated challenge rooms focus the game’s horde combat into compact survival tests.

What separates XXL from most retro-inspired shooters is its willingness to turn weapon loadouts into a toy box of destructive experimentation. Classic Serious Sam creatures return alongside stranger additions, including chimp-like attackers and loud, bizarre new foes, and several bosses punctuate the campaign with larger-scale fights. The colorful cutout art and deliberately corny humor make it feel lighter than the relentless enemy counts suggest, although later encounters can demand sharp movement and quick reactions. Fans of Metal Slug, Contra, or the arcade intensity of the main Serious Sam series will find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers get an accessible introduction to Sam’s simple but satisfying philosophy: keep moving, keep firing, and bring far more guns than necessary.
