A hypothetical invasion of Japan becomes a tense, casualty-heavy wargame where every landing beach, airfield, and harbor matters. Set in late 1945 and early 1946, it imagines a world in which atomic weapons do not force Japan’s surrender, leaving the Allies to execute Operation Downfall: the planned assaults on Kyūshū and, later, the approaches to Tokyo. The tone is sober rather than heroic, focused on the brutal logistics and political pressure behind what could have become history’s largest amphibious campaign. Both sides enter the conflict with formidable strengths and deeply dangerous weaknesses.

Players command divisional land formations and air wings across weekly turns, with each map region representing roughly 100 square miles. Allied forces must establish beachheads, seize functional ports to keep supplies moving, capture airbases for tactical support, and push inland despite poor weather and a punishing timetable. Japan relies on fortified positions, unforgiving terrain, committed civilian resistance, and special actions such as kamikaze attacks or midget submarines, while its limited mobile reserves make every redeployment crucial. Combat cards and event systems represent naval fire, airborne operations, political decisions, unusual weapons, and other factors that a traditional unit-counter system cannot easily show.

Several scenarios cover the Kyūshū landings, the larger follow-up offensive, and potential Soviet intervention around Hokkaido, generally lasting from 10 to 27 turns. Alternative starting forces, replacement levels, air support, deployment options, and airborne choices give the campaign meaningful replay value instead of locking players into a single historical script. Domestic power struggles also matter, including Japanese factions debating peace or continued resistance and the importance of protecting the Emperor from capture. Fans of serious hex-and-counter strategy in the vein of John Tiller-style operational games or other SGS titles will appreciate its focused scale; newcomers can learn its systems, but should expect the Allies—especially the United States—to demand careful planning rather than easy overwhelming-force victories.
