The Loam Lands make a grim first impression: a decaying, surreal realm where cults, cosmic horror, and unstable reality coexist beneath the gaze of a mysterious lunar citadel. Source of Madness is a side-scrolling action roguelite built around the anxiety of never knowing what monstrosity waits in the next corridor. You play a newly initiated Acolyte pushing through haunted settlements, underground ruins, and strange towers in search of answers about the world’s godlike forces. Its tone is bleak and oppressive, but the fast, explosive combat keeps the nightmare moving at a satisfying pace.

Runs revolve around fighting through procedurally assembled stages, gathering gold and equipment, uncovering lore, and trying to carry enough strength into the next deadly region. Combat favors close-range magical weapons, evasive movement, and careful timing, with enemies capable of swarming the screen or attacking through bizarre, unpredictable body shapes. Defeated monsters drop gear with different stats and effects, while progression lets you spend resources on classes, passive upgrades, spells, and skill-tree choices that alter future attempts. Death sends you back to regroup and build a stronger Acolyte, so repeated failure gradually becomes part of the advancement loop rather than a complete reset.

Its most striking feature is the enemy design: creatures are procedurally constructed and animated with machine-learning-assisted techniques, producing malformed beasts that often look unlike anything in a conventional roguelite. That unpredictability gives even familiar encounters an uneasy edge, especially when an absurdly shaped enemy suddenly proves far more dangerous than it appears. The hand-drawn, ink-heavy visual style also separates it from cleaner roguelites, turning every location into a grotesque dark-fantasy illustration.
