Eo faces another catastrophe as the demon Zazhut breaks free and turns his wrath toward the already battered Shaikan. SpellForce 2: Demons of the Past closes out the long-running fantasy saga with a campaign built around an Elder of the Shaikan, old allies, uncertain loyalties, and a desperate search for divine help. Its tone is familiar high fantasy, but it carries the weight of a finale: ruined lands, ancient grudges, and a threat that demands more than simply winning the next battle. The result is an old-school hybrid that combines party-based role-playing adventure with the large-scale command of a real-time strategy game.

Players create either a male or female avatar, develop a hero through equipment and spells, recruit companions, and tackle a main story supported by a substantial stack of optional quests. On RPG-focused maps, exploration, dialogue, loot, and tactical fights take the lead; other missions expand into RTS scenarios where gathering resources, constructing a base, and directing armies decide the outcome. Nearly every major race can be brought into the action, including the Pact, Clan, and Shaikan, giving the campaign a broader tactical palette than a straightforward hero-led RPG. The standalone release also includes free-play, skirmish, domination, cooperative free-game sessions, and a survival mode for up to three players, complete with boss encounters.

What separates it from most fantasy strategy games is the constant shift in scale. One moment hinges on a carefully equipped hero and a small group of specialists, while the next asks for production lines, defenses, and a well-timed army push in the spirit of Warcraft III. Eight total worlds, new spells, weapon types, item sets, and roughly 25 hours of campaign content give completionists plenty to chase, though its older interface and deliberate pacing may feel dated beside modern RTS releases. Demons of the Past suits SpellForce veterans best because of its sequel-heavy story, but newcomers who enjoy classic RPG/RTS blends and patient campaign design can still find a satisfying, content-rich fantasy finale.
