Styx: Shards of Darkness (v1.05)

A foul-mouthed goblin thief takes center stage in a stealth adventure built around shadows, vertical spaces, and careful improvisation. Styx: Shards of Darkness sends its small but deadly antihero through lavish Elven architecture, hostile Dwarven territory, and dangerous wilderness while a larger conflict threatens goblin survival. The mood is darker and more polished than its predecessor, but Styx’s cynical commentary keeps the story from becoming self-serious. Rather than turning its hero into a warrior, the game makes vulnerability part of the appeal: being spotted usually means escaping, hiding, or dying.

Each mission is a broad infiltration playground with several routes through guarded halls, rooftops, ledges, tunnels, and concealed passages. Styx climbs almost any useful surface, slips through tight spaces, picks pockets, crafts gadgets and traps, and silently removes targets when the opportunity is safe. Progression comes through skill trees that improve assassination techniques, stealth movement, alchemy, and amber-based magic, including the signature ability to create disposable clones that distract guards, trigger mechanisms, or scout dangerous areas. Players can pursue ghost-like runs with no kills, make selective use of lethal tools, or recover from mistakes through quick thinking; a separate co-op option also lets a friend join selected missions.

What stands out is the way its compact hero interacts with spaces designed on a grand scale, turning every towering city district into a layered puzzle of sightlines and escape routes. Enemy patrols, special foes, light sources, vertical traversal, and clone management give it more tactical texture than a simple wait-and-backstab stealth game. Unreal Engine 4 gives the locations richer detail, though the real strength remains the freedom to plan an infiltration your own way. Fans of Dishonored’s flexible levels or the classic Thief series’ patient sneaking will find plenty to like, while newcomers should be ready for demanding stealth that punishes reckless combat.
