A quarantined woodland, abandoned village, and failed dark-energy facility form the uneasy playground of Surrounded, an open-world indie horror experience built around tension rather than constant action. Three decades after a catastrophic laboratory meltdown, the sealed-off region remains warped by an unknown force, along with whatever now stalks its roads and tree lines. Players enter with friends to investigate rumors of creatures and unnatural activity, only to find that the darkness is rarely empty. The mood is deliberately oppressive: every distant noise, half-open door, and shadow between the trees can feel like a warning.

Exploration drives the experience, sending players through forests, derelict structures, and potentially hidden locations while searching for clues and useful routes through the contaminated zone. The environment is designed to be highly interactive, with buildings that can be entered and numerous objects that can be examined or manipulated rather than treated as background scenery. Stealth matters because the hostile creatures respond to sound, turning careless movement and noisy interactions into genuine risks. Cooperative play gives groups the chance to search more efficiently and watch one another’s backs, but splitting up can also make an already threatening map much more dangerous.

Surrounded stands out by pairing the freedom of a large explorable map with creature behavior that encourages restraint, awareness, and nervous communication between teammates. Its Unreal Engine 5 presentation aims for realistic lighting and audio, making the wilderness feel especially effective when visibility drops and danger is heard before it is seen. Rather than following a tightly scripted haunted-house route, it leans into the uncertainty of being lost in a hostile place where almost any building may hide answers—or something worse.
