Combat plays like a third-person cooperative action game rather than a traditional menu-driven RPG. Players select from 21 launch characters, each filling a recognizable battlefield role, from close-range fighters and agile assassins to ranged damage dealers, healers, buffers, and tank-like defenders. Missions mix linear story stages with enemy-heavy battles, objective-based encounters, and escalating boss fights, while experience, equipment, and character upgrades improve a chosen fighter’s effectiveness. The main attraction is online co-op for up to 20 players, divided into five four-person parties, where coordinated positioning, revives, healing, and damage phases matter far more than simply attacking alone.

Its enormous raid format is the clearest difference from earlier SAO adaptations, giving battles the frantic feel of an MMO boss run translated into an action RPG. Huge enemies demand preparation and team awareness, especially when mechanics punish scattered players or require separate groups to handle simultaneous threats. Character switching also gives the roster real variety, since a sniper, sword specialist, mage, and support unit approach the same encounter very differently.
