Avalon is a dying island where Arthurian legend has curdled into disease, superstition, and desperate political struggle. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a first-person open-world RPG that trades shining knights and courtly romance for rotten villages, haunted ruins, and an ever-encroaching supernatural fog called the Wyrdness. You begin as an imprisoned nobody, then carve out a place among factions trying to survive the Red Death and decide what remains of a broken kingdom. Its mood sits somewhere between Skyrim’s free-roaming fantasy and the oppressive folklore horror of Dark Souls, with a distinctly bleak Polish fantasy edge.

Most of your time goes into wandering sizeable regions, accepting quests with multiple outcomes, delving through caves and crypts, and returning with better weapons, armor, ingredients, and hard-won knowledge. Combat happens in real time from a first-person view, supporting swords, shields, heavy weapons, bows, stealthy approaches, and several flavors of magic, so a heavily armored brawler plays very differently from a spellcaster or poison-focused rogue. Character growth comes through attributes, perks, gear, crafting, alchemy, and skill choices rather than a locked class system, allowing plenty of room to reshape a build as threats become nastier. Dialogue decisions, faction relationships, and major story choices give quests consequences, while exploration regularly turns up strange side stories that are easy to miss if you follow only the critical path.

What stands out is the setting’s willingness to treat Arthur’s legacy as a source of grief rather than easy heroism. The world draws on the Tainted Grail tabletop universe and layers its lore across more than a millennium of conquest, ancient inhabitants, failed ideals, and the unexplained Wyrdness. Rough edges in animation and combat feel are part of the package, but the sense of discovery, flexible role-playing, and unusually grim quest writing carry the experience. Players who want another polished theme-park RPG may find it uneven, while fans of Elder Scrolls-style freedom, gothic fantasy, and morally murky adventures are likely to find Avalon worth getting lost in.
