Its alternative-history setting balances Enlightenment-era curiosity against stubborn superstition, where court politics, early science, and graveyard rites uneasily coexist. The mood is deliberately slow-burning and macabre, focused less on heroic fantasy than on the cost of pursuing knowledge nobody else is meant to possess.

Character creation begins with a voiced origin story that establishes your background, talents, and former profession, with military, diplomatic, and academic paths shaping later conversations. Most of the adventure revolves around speaking with a huge cast of inhabitants, gathering information, manipulating rivals, making bargains, and choosing how openly to pursue necromancy. A public Trust system gives those social choices real mechanical weight: suspicious townsfolk can restrict your options, drag you before the law, or turn violently against you if fear gets out of hand. When diplomacy fails, tactical turn-based battles let you combine conventional weapons, allies, sinister rituals, combat magic, and reanimated servants against human and supernatural threats.

What separates it from many indie RPGs is the scale of its authored writing and its commitment to consequences rather than simple good-or-evil meters. More than 180 individually portrayed characters populate a story built around investigation, secrecy, and the practical difficulties of becoming a monster in a community that watches every move. The hand-drawn presentation and old-world atmosphere suit its dense, literary approach, while the gradual access to darker spells gives progression a satisfying sense of escalation.
