Players found cities, claim resources, research spells, recruit troops, and move armies across hexagonal maps one turn at a time. Combat plays out through unit positioning and faction abilities, while terrain matters heavily; magic can damage enemies directly, improve provinces, summon creatures, reshape the land, or call on divine support. Great Mages define much of a run, offering distinctive powers and spell access, while a custom mage option lets players build around preferred strategies. Heroes join expanding empires, gain equipment and artifacts, and become valuable leaders for stacks of units, especially when fighting powerful neutral creatures or enemy strongholds.

The standout feature is how freely the game mixes traditional empire management with overwhelming magical escalation. Six races provide different military identities, from conventional human forces to undead armies and otherworldly Planestriders, while glyphs let players alter spells rather than merely unlock them. Randomized worlds, Sandbox mode, multiple leaders, and varied map conditions give it solid replay value even after the story campaign ends. Fans of Civilization V, Age of Wonders, or the original Warlock will appreciate its faster, more combat-focused approach, though newcomers should expect a demanding opening where reckless expansion can quickly become fatal.
