XO combines fleet command, real-time space combat, and roguelike unpredictability in a desperate science-fiction escape story that feels closer to a battered convoy than a clean military campaign. The tone is tense and resource-starved: lasers solve some problems, but food shortages, damaged hulls, frightened civilians, and hostile politics can prove just as dangerous. Each run builds a new chain of encounters, turning the voyage into a story of narrow victories, ugly compromises, and occasional absurdity—including the strategic value of freshly baked cookies.

Command revolves around gathering ships, supplies, weapons, and allies while keeping the fleet moving ahead of overwhelming danger. Battles ask you to position and employ a mixed force rather than simply field the largest possible armada, while distress signals, merchants, pirates, wrecks, caches, stations, and traps continually interrupt your route with opportunities and risks. Every vessel has a practical role: warships bring guns, farmships sustain the population, industrial craft handle production and repairs, and cargo ships expand storage, but each new addition also consumes precious resources. Decisions extend beyond combat, since diplomacy, confiscation, sacrifice, and negotiation all shape how your struggling fleet holds together.

Its strongest idea is that fleet growth is never an uncomplicated upgrade. Different factions live side by side under pressure, creating infighting, sabotage, and political confrontations that make leadership as important as tactical skill; choosing favorites may secure short-term loyalty while poisoning the larger mission. Procedural runs give XO the replayable uncertainty of FTL, but its emphasis on ship roles and internal faction management adds a broader command layer, with some of the scrappy space-adventure character associated with Star Control.
