Difficulty settings make the campaign approachable for FPS newcomers, but higher modes turn every arena into a resource-management test where missed shots and careless positioning carry real consequences.

Quake II stands out through its weighty weapons, readable enemy silhouettes, and levels that feel like functioning pieces of an enormous alien war machine rather than isolated shooting galleries. Its graphics are unmistakably late-1990s, yet the atmosphere, sharp feedback, and clean combat design still hold up far better than many contemporaries. Multiplayer adds the essential deathmatch side of the package, built around map knowledge, weapon control, speed, and relentless fragging, while the PC community supplies countless maps, mods, and visual enhancements.
