Aldor is a bruised, dangerous medieval kingdom where every road can lead to a payday, a ruin, or a shallow grave. Stoneshard is a deliberately harsh turn-based RPG about surviving as a freelance mercenary in a land fractured by war, disease, bandits, and occult horrors. Its measured pace gives every expedition weight: leaving town means managing supplies, wounds, money, and the real possibility that a supposedly simple contract spirals into disaster. The mood is grim but not hopeless, driven by the satisfaction of turning a battered novice into a capable professional through caution and hard-earned knowledge.

Most of your time goes into accepting jobs, traveling between settlements and points of interest, clearing hostile dungeons, looting valuables, and returning alive to sell your haul. Combat plays out on a grid and rewards positioning, line of sight, terrain awareness, enemy knowledge, and the willingness to retreat when a fight goes wrong. Character building is unusually open-ended, with a large pool of skills and gear rather than rigid class locks, allowing combinations built around weapons, magic, mobility, survival tools, or specialized tactics. Survival extends beyond hit points: bleeding limbs, pain, intoxication, infections, morale, and sanity all affect performance, so treating an injury can be as strategically important as landing the next strike.

What separates Stoneshard from many pixel-art RPGs is how seriously it takes consequences. A cut arm can undermine your weapon use, a terrified character can lose control under pressure, and enemies ranging from highwaymen to undead demand different preparations instead of brute-force solutions. Its world is not a theme-park sandbox, but a hostile territory shaped by contracts, trading opportunities, scattered ruins, and repeatable expeditions that create strong risk-versus-reward decisions. Fans of Battle Brothers, Darkest Dungeon, and traditional roguelike tension should find plenty to like, while newcomers should arrive patient and ready to learn through failure. Ironman mode raises the stakes further by making death permanent, but the core appeal already lies in surviving one more journey than you thought possible.
